A deeply disturbing case has come to light in Connecticut, where a man is now facing murder charges after his mother’s body was discovered in pieces inside trash bags at her home. The tragic discovery shocked the community and has led to serious charges against the victim’s son.
What Happened to Tina Lloyd?
In March this year, West Haven police received a call for a welfare check at the home of 70-year-old Tina Lloyd. Her older son had contacted the police, concerned after not hearing from her for a while.
When officers reached her home on Nashawen Avenue, they noticed a strong smell of decomposition. After entering the house, they found a horrifying scene—Tina’s dismembered body was stuffed into 14 to 16 trash bags, all hidden inside a locked closet. Police also found signs that someone had tried to start a fire in the house.
The Accused: Her Own Son
The woman’s younger son, 27-year-old Theodore Lloyd, is now being charged with murder and tampering with evidence. He was earlier arrested in April for trying to burn down the house and trespassing. After further investigation, prosecutors added the new, more serious charges.
A judge has now increased his bond from $1 million to $3 million following his arraignment on the new charges.
How Police Identified the Suspect
According to the police, the victim’s body was so badly decomposed that it took time to confirm her identity. DNA tests were used to match her remains.
Detectives reviewed a large amount of evidence and found surveillance footage that showed Theodore buying items at Home Depot and Walmart that were later used in the dismemberment. These included cutting tools and even an electric chainsaw.
Detective Jeff Gavinelli said many of the tools were wrapped in plastic bags, possibly in an effort to hide or destroy them. Lighter fluid and paper were also found in the house, which police believe were meant to start a fire.
What the Community and Family Said
Tina’s sister, Debbie Hart, welcomed the murder charge and promised to attend every court hearing for justice. “We just want closure so we can heal,” she told reporters.
Neighbours described Tina as a sweet and active woman, despite her age. Denny Steeves, a local resident, said she used to walk around with her walker and even carried groceries herself as a form of exercise. “Very, very nice lady. Tragic, tragic,” he added.
Tina hadn’t been seen by neighbours for two to three months, which is why they were worried.
Background on the Suspect
Police shared that Theodore used to live with his mother but moved out in 2018 after a domestic issue. At the time of the murder, he was reportedly homeless. Officers did not share a clear motive for the killing, and investigations are still ongoing.
The suspect was arrested by Hartford police on April 14 and then handed over to West Haven authorities.
