A woman from Florida is now behind bars after causing a deadly car accident and trying to run away. The crash happened a few months ago, but she has now been officially charged. Police say she tried to flee because her boyfriend told her to, but she didn’t get far.
What Happened in the Crash
The incident took place around 1 a.m. on April 29 at the intersection of West Sunrise Boulevard and NW 24th Avenue in Fort Lauderdale. Beverly Yvonne Slaughter, a 25-year-old woman, was driving a 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class at high speed.
As she entered the intersection, a Nissan Altima was turning left on a green signal. Slaughter’s car crashed directly into the side of the Altima.
The crash was very serious. Four people were in the Altima. Two of them had major injuries and had to be taken to the hospital. Sadly, one of them died on May 2 after being taken off life support.
Slaughter Tried to Escape
After the crash, instead of staying at the scene, Slaughter allegedly ran from her car. A video captured her walking quietly near a McDonald’s parking lot, trying not to be noticed. A Fort Lauderdale police officer found her and arrested her.
When asked why she ran, Slaughter reportedly told police it was because her boyfriend told her to escape the scene.
Serious Charges and Past Driving History
Slaughter is now facing 14 charges, including vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of a deadly accident, and driving with a suspended license that caused a death. These are very serious offences.
Prosecutors say Slaughter should not be released on bail because of her bad driving history. Her license has been suspended since 2021. She was previously convicted of driving without a license and was also arrested in 2023 for drunk driving, fleeing police, and reckless driving.
Prosecutors believe she is a danger to the public and should stay in jail. A judge agreed with them and has ordered that she remain in Broward County Jail without bond. Her next court date is scheduled for Friday.
This tragic case shows how dangerous reckless driving can be. A life has been lost, and several others were hurt because of one person’s irresponsible choices.
