A police officer in North Carolina is facing a criminal charge after allegedly threatening her neighbor during a personal dispute. The officer, who was off duty at the time, reportedly used her position to intimidate the woman and even threatened to reveal personal information, saying she could do so because she is a cop.
The case has raised serious concerns about misuse of power by law enforcement officials.
North Carolina Cop Charged After Threatening Neighbor
Jazmin Featherstone, a 26-year-old officer with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, has been charged with communicating threats, a misdemeanor. The charge comes after a heated argument with a neighbor on Tuesday evening in the 5000 block of Pinebrook Drive.
The confrontation reportedly started over a mail-related dispute involving Featherstone, her mother, and the victim. According to court documents, the officer allegedly said she would “f— her up” and expose private details about the neighbor “because she is the police.”
What Led to the Incident?
The neighbor, whose name has not been disclosed, said the issue began when she tried to install a mailbox post near the property line. Featherstone and her mother accused her of trespassing and stealing mail. Things escalated quickly, and the neighbor said the officer’s threats were completely unprovoked.
The woman also said that a member of Featherstone’s family pointed a firearm at her during the argument, although it’s unclear who exactly held the weapon. No injuries were reported, but the situation was serious enough that the police were called for an “assault with a deadly weapon (no injury)” complaint.
Officer Used Her Role to Intimidate, Says Victim
In her written statement to the police, the neighbor said Featherstone threatened to beat her up and reveal personal things about her, allegedly using her authority as a police officer to scare her. She also claimed Featherstone warned of filing a civil lawsuit, accusing the neighbor of stealing mail.
The woman told police that Featherstone’s actions were encouraged by her mother, and that the whole situation happened without any valid reason.
Department Responds to the Charges
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings released a statement saying the charge against Officer Featherstone is very serious. He said the department expects its officers to maintain high standards, both on and off duty.
“We will not tolerate actions that compromise public trust,” Chief Jennings said. “Officers are held to the same laws they are sworn to uphold.”
At the time of writing, it’s not clear if any disciplinary action has been taken against Featherstone by the department.
This case is a reminder that law enforcement officers must act responsibly at all times, whether they are on duty or not. Using one’s position to threaten or intimidate others is not just wrong — it damages public trust.
As the investigation continues, all eyes will be on how the police department handles the matter and ensures accountability. Trust in law enforcement comes not just from following rules but from setting the right example, both in uniform and out of it.
