A 31-year-old Minnesota man, Bryan Demarais, has been sentenced to more than 30 years in prison for fatally shooting his wife, Kayla Demarais, in a horrific incident that occurred in December 2023.

The murder took place while the couple’s two children, ages 8 and 11, were in the house. Demarais was sentenced for second-degree murder, as well as two counts of felony child endangerment after pleading guilty to the charges.

The Murder and Investigation

The tragic events unfolded on December 28, 2023, when Bryan Demarais called 911 to report that he had just killed his wife. He explained that he had shot Kayla in the head multiple times with a .22 caliber handgun during a heated argument.

Demarais also requested that his children be safely removed from the home to avoid witnessing their mother’s death.

When authorities arrived at the scene, they found Kayla’s lifeless body in the living room, suffering from at least one gunshot wound to the head. Bryan Demarais was immediately arrested after he exited the home and surrendered to law enforcement.

Motive Behind the Murder

During his interview with police, Demarais explained that the couple had been experiencing marital problems, including financial struggles and Kayla’s extramarital affair.

On the morning of the murder, he had discovered text messages on his wife’s phone that confirmed her affair with another man. Enraged, Demarais confronted Kayla, accusing her of not working on their relationship and cheating on him.

After the confrontation, Demarais allegedly spoke to their children, telling them that he and their mother were getting a divorce due to her infidelity. Later that day, Demarais became further angered after refusing to answer a phone call from his wife.

The situation escalated when he returned home from work early, where a violent argument ensued before he fatally shot Kayla.

The Children’s Witness Testimony

The couple’s two children were present during the argument and witnessed the tragic incident. Both children told authorities they heard their parents arguing, followed by multiple gunshots and their mother screaming. The children then saw their mother fall to the ground before their father ordered them to shut the bedroom door.

Despite the violence, both children were unharmed during the incident, but the trauma they witnessed will likely affect them for years to come.

Sentencing and Legal Outcome

Bryan Demarais was sentenced to 30 years and five months in prison. Under Minnesota law, he will serve approximately 19 years of his sentence in prison and the remaining portion on supervised release.

In addition to the murder charge, Demarais was also convicted of felony child endangerment for exposing his children to such a violent crime.

Bryan Demarais will spend decades behind bars for the murder of his wife, Kayla Demarais, and for the emotional and psychological damage caused to their children.

The case highlights the devastating consequences of domestic violence and the lasting impact such a violent act can have on a family. As he serves his sentence, the two young children will have to cope with the trauma of witnessing the brutal killing of their mother.
