The off-duty police officer tragically killed during a shooting at 345 Park Avenue in New York City on Monday, July 28, has been identified as Didarul Islam, a 36-year-old NYPD officer.
Islam, who was a 3 ½-year veteran of the force, was one of at least four individuals shot and killed in the incident, which also left a fifth person in critical condition.
The Shooting Incident
The shooting took place at a busy office building in Midtown Manhattan, where companies like Blackstone and the NFL have offices. The gunman, later identified as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura from Las Vegas, entered the building and immediately opened fire.
Islam, who was off-duty at the time, was among the victims. The gunman, after shooting multiple people, took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Islam was a father of two, and his wife was pregnant with their third child at the time of his death. Mayor Eric Adams spoke at a press briefing, calling Islam a hero who was “doing what he does best”—saving lives and protecting New Yorkers.
Islam’s dedication to his job and his community was highlighted as a reflection of the immigrant experience and the values of New York City.
A Community and City in Mourning
Islam, originally from Bangladesh, was living in the Bronx and had made significant contributions to the NYPD during his time with the force. Mayor Adams described him as a man of faith, a devoted family member, and a true-blue New Yorker who believed in living a godly life.
His tragic death has left his family and many in the city mourning.
“The city is reeling tonight, and four innocent families are mourning, including the family of Officer Islam,” Mayor Adams tweeted. “He represented the best of New York City.”
The other victims in the shooting included a male and two females, though their identities have not been released as authorities wait for family notifications. Additionally, four people sustained injuries while trying to flee the building and were treated at a local hospital.
The Shooter’s Background
New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch provided more details about the shooting during the press briefing. She confirmed that Tamura entered the building’s lobby and immediately targeted an NYPD officer before continuing his attack on other victims in the building.
The police commissioner added that there was no ongoing threat to the public, as Tamura was the lone shooter and had a documented history of mental health issues.
Islam’s Legacy
Didarul Islam’s legacy as a dedicated officer and loving father will live on, as he is remembered not only for his service but for his deep commitment to New York City and its people. His heroism in the face of danger serves as a reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face daily in their efforts to protect their communities.
