A shooting that occurred at 345 Park Avenue in New York City on Monday, July 28, left four people dead and one critically injured. The gunman has been identified as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura from Las Vegas, who opened fire on several victims, including an off-duty NYPD officer.
The Deadly Incident
Shane Tamura, armed with an M4 rifle, exited a black BMW parked on Park Avenue between 51st and 52nd Streets and walked toward the building’s entrance. Surveillance footage shows him entering the lobby of the high-rise office building, immediately turning right, and opening fire on an off-duty police officer.
He then shot a woman taking cover behind a pillar and continued through the lobby, spraying gunfire at others.
Tamura made his way to the elevator bank, where he shot a security guard hiding behind the desk. Another man was injured in the lobby during the attack.
Tamura continued his rampage by heading to the 33rd floor, where he killed one more person at Rudin Management’s offices. Afterward, he shot himself in the chest, ending the deadly spree.
NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that Tamura acted alone and emphasized that there was no ongoing threat to the public. Authorities also revealed that the gunman had a documented mental health history.
A motive for the shooting remains unclear, and it is unknown whether the shooter was targeting any specific organization in the building.
Victims and Tributes
Among the deceased was 36-year-old Didarul Islam, an off-duty police officer who served in the 47th precinct of the NYPD. Islam was a father of two, with a third child on the way. Mayor Eric Adams expressed the city’s grief, calling Islam a “true-blue New Yorker” who embodied the best qualities of the city.
“He protected New Yorkers. He was an immigrant from Bangladesh, and he loved this city,” Mayor Adams said. “He was a person of faith and a person who believed in God, living out a godly life.” Commissioner Tisch also praised Islam, describing him as a hero who died doing his job to protect others.
The identities of the other victims have not been disclosed pending family notifications, but one remains in critical condition. Four additional people sustained minor injuries while fleeing the scene.
The Aftermath and Reactions
The building where the shooting took place houses several major companies, including Blackstone Inc., the NFL’s headquarters, and KPMG. The commercial building’s owner, Rudin Management, expressed gratitude for the bravery of building security and law enforcement in the aftermath of the incident.
In a statement, KPMG extended their sympathy to the victims and their families, saying, “Our hearts go out to the victims of this horrific act and their families. We are incredibly grateful for the bravery of building security and law enforcement.”
