A 74-year-old man from Norfolk, Virginia, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after being convicted of killing 38-year-old Albert Patrick Johnson. The fatal incident, which occurred on June 20, 2023, was the result of a tragic mistake when Johnson knocked on Leroy Frank King’s door, thinking it belonged to a friend.
King, who had a history of violence, shot Johnson in the neck and torso, leading to his death.
The Fatal Incident
On the evening of June 20, 2023, Johnson mistakenly knocked on King’s door, confusing it with a friend’s apartment. After knocking again later that day, King responded by grabbing a gun, coming outside, and shooting Johnson.
Medics arrived at the scene but pronounced Johnson dead shortly after. King, who had a history of previous gun-related violence, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.
Previous Violent History
This was not the first time King had used a firearm to harm someone. In 2003, King was convicted in a nonfatal shooting of a neighbor. Despite the previous conviction, King continued to deny any wrongdoing in Johnson’s killing, even during his sentencing.
He claimed that he was “legally entitled” to shoot Johnson, but prosecutors and the judge disagreed, pointing out that King’s actions were unwarranted and dangerous.
The Court’s Response and Sentencing
After a jury found King guilty of second-degree murder and using a firearm in the commission of murder, he was sentenced to 45 years in prison. However, the judge suspended 20 years of his sentence, meaning King will serve 25 years behind bars.
Additionally, King will be on probation for three years if he is ever released. Prosecutors emphasized that King’s age and previous violent history made him a continuing danger to the public.

Albert Patrick Johnson, the victim, was remembered for his vibrant personality and his dreams of becoming a rapper. Despite suffering injuries as a teenager that left him disabled, Johnson continued to pursue his passions.
