A heartbreaking case from New York has shocked many. A man is accused of violently killing his wife during a late-night argument at their home. The details shared by the police and court have raised serious concerns about domestic violence.
What Happened in Queens?
Jose Lequerica, 50, has been charged with the murder of his wife, 48-year-old Asli Ak. The incident happened in November 2024 at their apartment in Jackson Heights, Queens. According to the police, Jose beat Asli so badly that it crushed her brain stem. This kind of injury is extremely serious and often fatal.
He was arrested at his home by officers from the NYPD 115th Precinct. After the arrest, he appeared in court and pleaded not guilty.
Details of the Assault
The Queens District Attorney’s Office shared that the attack happened late in the evening on November 15, 2024. Jose reportedly hit Asli on her head, face, and body several times while they were in the bedroom.
After the assault, Jose left the apartment for nearly two hours. When he returned, he didn’t check on Asli and instead went to sleep on the couch.
Delay in Getting Help
The next day, around 10:45 a.m., Jose entered the bedroom and found Asli unconscious on the floor. Shockingly, instead of calling for help, he left her there for more than seven hours. He finally called 911 at 6:22 p.m.
Emergency workers came and rushed Asli to Elmhurst Hospital. She had serious bruises and injuries all over her body and never regained consciousness. She was declared brain-dead five days later, on November 20, 2024.
Medical Report and Cause of Death
An autopsy confirmed that Asli died from blunt force trauma to the head. Her brain had swollen so much from the injury that it crushed her brain stem, making recovery impossible. The medical examiner ruled her death a homicide.
Court Case and Next Steps
Lequerica has been indicted on two counts of second-degree murder and is being held without bail. He is set to appear in court again on August 12.
Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz strongly condemned the crime. She called domestic violence a serious issue and reminded the public that help is available for anyone in danger. She expressed sympathy for Asli’s family and promised to seek justice.
Remembering Asli Ak
Asli was remembered as a kind and loving person. Her brother started a GoFundMe page, describing her as someone who cared deeply for others. She had worked as a teacher and nanny before becoming a successful real estate broker.
Though her dream of owning a real estate company never came true, she had a strong impact on many lives.
This tragic case is a painful reminder of the deadly risks of domestic violence. Asli Ak’s story is not just about her death—it’s about how we must all be aware, alert, and supportive to prevent such tragedies in the future.
Justice will now take its course as Jose Lequerica faces trial. For those facing abuse, it’s important to seek help and know that support is always available.
