A Florida teenager is facing serious charges after allegedly leaving her 2-year-old daughter alone in a hot car while she watched a movie at a theater with her siblings.
The incident occurred in Lake City, where temperatures reached 94 degrees, with a heat index of 107 degrees at the time. The teenager, 18-year-old Tripura Merriex, is now facing felony child neglect charges for this dangerous act.
The Incident at Regal Cinema 90
According to local police, Merriex left her daughter unattended in a 2002 Cadillac Escalade at the Regal Cinema 90 on U.S. Highway 90. The child was left in the front passenger seat of the locked vehicle for at least 30 minutes.
Witnesses noticed the situation and quickly called 911, prompting police to respond to the scene. Upon arrival, officers found the young girl visibly distressed, with a flushed red face, profuse sweating, and crying. The police had to break the vehicle’s window to rescue the child.
Merriex’s Reaction to the Situation
Merriex reportedly appeared very nonchalant and unconcerned about the situation when police arrived. According to the arrest report, she claimed that she had accidentally locked her daughter in the car.
