In Texas City, Texas, firefighters are being praised as “heroes of the half shell” after saving a sea turtle in distress at the Texas City Dike.
The Call for Help
The Texas City Fire Department (TCFD) rushed to the scene when a group of visitors noticed an injured sea turtle struggling in the water. The turtle was having trouble swimming due to being tangled in fishing line, and there was a hook stuck in one of its flippers.
Firefighters Take Action
When onlookers couldn’t reach the turtle, TCFD firefighters immediately stepped in. They climbed over large rocks and waded through the water to reach the turtle. With great care, the firefighters carefully removed the fishing line and freed the turtle from the hook.
A Safe Recovery
After the rescue, the sea turtle was carried to safety and taken to a wildlife recovery center in nearby Galveston. Experts at the center are now providing care for the turtle, and it is expected to make a full recovery.
In moments of distress like this, it’s clear that the quick thinking and bravery of the firefighters helped save the life of an endangered sea turtle. The Texas City Fire Department has earned much praise for their compassionate and heroic efforts.
