A Florida man has been arrested for allegedly killing a rival at a convenience store, and his sister has been charged for her role as the getaway driver. The incident, which occurred in March 2022, escalated from a previous altercation and led to a fatal shooting at Tony’s Market in Fort Lauderdale.
Details of the Shooting Incident
Warren Pollock, 24, is accused of murdering Steven Black, 34, on March 13, 2022, in what is believed to be a revenge killing. Police claim that the shooting was in retaliation for an alleged battery incident involving Black the day before.
At 6:50 p.m. on March 13, Fort Lauderdale officers responded to calls reporting a man shot at the convenience store. Upon arrival, they found Black dead from multiple gunshot wounds.
Surveillance footage from Tony’s Market showed a suspect in black clothing, including a hood, walking past Black, who was talking to people near the store exit. The suspect then approached Black and fired a gun before fleeing the scene. The shooter was later identified as Warren Pollock.
The Getaway Driver and Investigation
After the shooting, the suspect ran towards a Nissan Altima, entering through the passenger side, and the car sped away. Investigators quickly identified the vehicle through a license plate reader and traced it to Wanisha Pollock, 29, Warren’s sister.
The car’s frequent presence near the store before the murder further pointed to the Pollocks being involved in the crime.
Wanisha Pollock was later questioned but chose to remain silent, requesting an attorney. The investigation also uncovered that the shooting was connected to a previous violent incident.
The Battery Incident That Led to the Murder
The motive behind the murder appears to be related to an incident that took place earlier on the same day. Steven Black had allegedly punched a man in the face in Lauderhill, Florida, which resulted in serious bodily harm. The altercation had involved Black and his friend visiting the mother of his friend’s child.
The situation escalated when Black tried to calm things down, but the punch occurred during the chaos. A photo of the incident was posted to social media, which led to tension between Black’s group and the family of the man who had been punched.
Police discovered that the Nissan Altima, registered to Wanisha, had been driven in front of Tony’s Market multiple times before the murder. Surveillance footage showed the car positioned for a quick getaway moments before the shooting.
Further Evidence and Arrests
Detectives learned that after the battery, a feud had begun between the families of the victim of the punch and Black’s family. They believe the murder was a form of retaliation. Investigators also linked Warren Pollock to a similar case of aggravated assault in Miami Gardens, where his vehicle was associated with a shooting incident.
Phone records from Wanisha Pollock revealed that she was in contact with several people connected to the events surrounding the murder, including the stepson of the victim of the earlier battery.
Her phone calls were tracked, showing that she was in communication with her brother, Warren Pollock, during the time leading up to the shooting.
Warren Pollock’s phone records also placed him near the crime scene before and after the murder. Both siblings’ involvement was supported by further investigation, and a search warrant was executed at Wanisha’s residence in April 2022.
The Arrests and Legal Proceedings
Wanisha Pollock was arrested on July 10, 2023, and posted a $20,000 bond. She is set to be arraigned on August 11, 2023. Her charges include accessory after the fact. Warren Pollock, who was found in Augusta, Georgia, was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service on July 8, 2023, and is currently being held in Georgia.
The investigation also revealed that the gun used in the murder had been used in several armed robberies in Miami Beach the week after the murder. The weapon was recovered from a man who had links to Warren Pollock.
This tragic incident highlights the dangerous consequences of unresolved violence and retaliation. Both Warren and Wanisha Pollock now face serious criminal charges for their roles in the murder of Steven Black.
As the case continues, investigators are piecing together the full extent of the Pollocks’ involvement in the events leading up to and following the shooting.
