This weekend, Galveston Island will be filled with waves, sun, and furry athletes as the 12th Annual Ohana Surf Dog Competition takes place. Hosted by the Galveston Island Humane Society (GIHS), the event promises an exciting day at the beach for dog lovers, families, and spectators alike.

Kristen Thompson, Executive Director of GIHS, explained that it’s a dog-only surf competition, with some assistance from humans but no humans riding the waves themselves. It’s all about the dogs’ balance and bravery as they take on the waves.
This exciting event isn’t just about the competition. It also supports GIHS’s ongoing programs, such as pet adoption, spaying and neutering, and emergency medical care for animals.
All the proceeds from the event will go directly to funding these vital programs that help improve the lives of homeless and neglected animals on the island.
