A Georgia father has been sentenced to life in prison plus 155 years for the tragic death of his 4-year-old daughter, Treasure McWeay. The sentencing follows a guilty verdict on all charges, including malice murder, felony murder, and multiple counts of child cruelty.
The case has left the community in shock, highlighting the extreme neglect and abuse that ultimately led to the child’s death.
The Heartbreaking Case
Rodney McWeay, 33, was sentenced by Fulton County Superior Judge Belinda Edwards after being convicted of 14 charges related to the death of his daughter. Treasure was found weighing only 24 pounds, severely malnourished and dehydrated, when she passed away at Hughes Spalding Children’s Hospital on December 11, 2023.
She had less than an ounce of water in her system when she died, a stark contrast to the healthy weight of a child her age, which should be around 50 pounds.
The case, which prosecutors referred to as a “house of horrors,” revealed that McWeay had subjected Treasure and her two brothers to extreme neglect and abuse. The children were kept in a locked room, denied food and proper care, and were only allowed to leave under McWeay’s strict control.
His home was found in unsanitary conditions, with no food or children’s clothing, though there were numerous surveillance cameras set up to monitor the children and prevent anyone, including law enforcement, from intervening.
McWeay’s Control and Abuse
According to authorities, McWeay’s abusive behavior began in May 2021 and lasted until December 2023. He controlled every aspect of his children’s lives, even after social services took custody of the children in June 2023 due to a complaint about the living conditions.
Within a week of losing custody, McWeay traveled to Maryland to retrieve the children, stealing the car of their mother, Passion Mitchell, to bring them back to Georgia.
The children were eventually hospitalized, with Treasure dying from the neglect. Her brothers also showed signs of severe malnutrition and other health problems. McWeay was arrested shortly after Treasure’s death when police, who had been surveilling his home, spotted him leaving and detained him.
Legal Outcome and Reaction
McWeay was convicted on charges including malice murder, felony murder, child cruelty, false imprisonment, kidnapping, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani T. Willis stated that the case serves as a heartbreaking reminder of what can happen when children are deprived of the safety and support they need.
During the trial, McWeay’s defense attorney argued that although McWeay made “wrong decisions,” he never intended to hurt his children. However, the jury did not accept this defense, and McWeay was sentenced to life plus 155 years, ensuring that he will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
This case serves as a tragic reminder of the dangers of abuse and neglect, particularly when children are controlled and manipulated by those meant to protect them.
