A new permanent lead meteorologist is set to take charge of the National Weather Service (NWS) office in Houston and Galveston, just ahead of the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season.

Matt Moreland, a native of Alief, has been appointed as the meteorologist-in-charge of the forecast office that covers much of Southeast Texas, from the Brazos Valley to the Gulf Coast.

A Key Appointment After Jeff Evans’ Early Retirement

The appointment of Moreland comes almost four months after the early retirement of Jeff Evans, the previous lead meteorologist. Evans was one of many longtime federal employees who accepted early retirement offers in February under the Trump administration.

This leadership change has left several positions within the office vacant, including senior meteorologists and other leadership roles, according to the office’s website.

Moreland’s Return to Southeast Texas

Matt Moreland’s return to Southeast Texas is timely, as the region approaches the historical peak of the Atlantic hurricane season in August and September. This is traditionally when tropical storms and hurricanes become most active in the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Basin.

Meteorologists and local emergency management officials emphasize the importance of having a permanent lead forecaster during this crucial period, as consistent and timely communication can significantly impact disaster response efforts.

Moreland’s Experience and Leadership Roles

Although Moreland’s official start date has yet to be confirmed, it is expected to be sometime in August. In the meantime, the Houston-Galveston office will continue to rotate managers from nearby offices to oversee daily operations.

Moreland’s vast experience with the National Weather Service has prepared him for this key role. He has previously held leadership positions, including serving as head of the Science and Technology Services Division at the Southern Region headquarters in Fort Worth.

Moreland has also served as the lead meteorologist in San Diego, California, and Key West, Florida.

Importantly, Moreland is no stranger to Southeast Texas. He worked in the region during major storms, including Tropical Storm Allison in 2001 and Hurricane Ike in 2008, between 1998 and 2011. His deep knowledge of the area and past experience in handling significant weather events make him a well-suited leader for the office.

A Warm Welcome for Moreland

“We are pleased to welcome Matt back home,” said Todd Lericos, the acting meteorologist-in-charge, in a message to the agency’s partners and colleagues. With Moreland’s leadership, the region will be in experienced hands as it faces the unpredictable challenges of hurricane season.
