Elko, Nevada – Starting Monday, dangerous fire weather will take over much of central and eastern Nevada, raising the risk of wildfires in several counties, including Nye, White Pine, and surrounding areas.
The weather is expected to bring strong winds and extremely dry conditions, which could lead to fires spreading quickly.
Fire Weather Watch Details
According to the National Weather Service in Elko, a Fire Weather Watch is in effect on Monday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. for fire zones 426 and 427, which cover Northern Nye County and the Central Nevada-Toiyabe region.
A second Fire Weather Watch will begin on Tuesday for the same areas, along with fire zone 425, which includes White Pine and Northeast Nye Counties.
Weather Conditions That Increase Fire Risk
Both Monday and Tuesday will see sustained southerly winds of 15–20 mph, with gusts reaching up to 36 mph by Tuesday afternoon. Additionally, the relative humidity in the area will drop to as low as 4%, making conditions perfect for fires to ignite and spread quickly.
Because of this, outdoor burning is strongly discouraged during these days.

Communities near Tonopah, Ely, and Eureka should stay alert during this period. Residents are urged to secure loose items that could be carried away by the wind, avoid lighting any open flames, and report any signs of smoke immediately. Local fire crews are on standby to respond quickly if needed.

This marks the first multi-day fire weather watch of July for this region, and it aligns with an unusually dry stretch of weather. The National Weather Service warns that additional Red Flag Warnings could be issued if the conditions worsen.
