For fireworks enthusiasts, this year’s Independence Day is extra special in League City. For the first time ever, residents can legally set off fireworks, a change that has sparked excitement throughout the community and business owners alike.
New Fireworks Law Brings Excitement
League City residents are thrilled by the new ordinance that allows them to legally celebrate with fireworks. Tyler Lincoln, a local resident, shared his excitement, saying, “You don’t have anything to worry about. There’s no anxiety.
You can shoot them off and have fun.” This change has also benefited local businesses, with Ivan Gusman, owner of Pescador Fireworks, seeing a rise in customers visiting his stand just outside the city limits. He believes the new rules are great for people who no longer need to travel far to get fireworks.
Last year, voters in League City overwhelmingly supported making fireworks legal, and the city council quickly updated the rules. Now, residents can legally set off fireworks on Independence Day and New Year’s Eve.
Firefighters Focus on Safety
While fireworks are now legal, they can be dangerous. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in 2024 alone, nearly 15,000 people were treated for firework-related injuries.
League City’s Fire Chief, Jeff Allen, emphasized the importance of following safety guidelines. “We feel that by putting this ordinance in place, with some rules and education, we have a good plan to allow people to enjoy fireworks safely,” he said.
Some of the new rules include:
You must be at least 18 years old to use fireworks.
Fireworks can only be used in residential areas, not in apartment complexes.
They can only be set off on Independence Day and New Year’s Eve, from sundown to 1:00 a.m.
The Fire Chief also mentioned that four fire marshal units and two fire engines will be on standby during the 4th of July celebrations. This year, instead of issuing tickets, officials will distribute flyers to educate people who may not follow the rules.
Safety Measures to Prevent Fire Hazards
One of the concerns with fireworks is the risk of fires. On New Year’s Eve 2023, fireworks caused five fires in League City. Fire Chief Allen urged residents to take extra care when cleaning up after using fireworks, suggesting they soak used fireworks with a garden hose or place them in a bucket of water.
League City’s Decision vs. Other Cities
While League City has embraced the idea of legalizing fireworks, not all nearby cities share the same view. In Rosenberg, a proposal to legalize fireworks was rejected after hearing from concerned neighbors.
Rosenberg Council Member Felix Vargas expressed worry about the risk of house fires, especially while people are sleeping. He didn’t want to be responsible for any harm that could come from legalizing fireworks.
Similarly, Texas City has taken a more cautious approach by releasing an online form for residents to report firework use, allowing police to address complaints efficiently.
For League City residents, this year’s Independence Day will be a memorable one, filled with legal fireworks and excitement. With safety rules in place and fire officials ready to act, residents can enjoy the festivities while keeping their neighborhoods safe.
However, it’s clear that other cities like Rosenberg and Texas City are taking a more cautious approach to fireworks safety.
