Thunderstorms are expected to return across much of Kansas on Friday, bringing a mix of rain, wind, and potential hail. The highest chances for rain will be in the north-central and northwest portions of the state, with storm chances ranging from 30% to 70%.
Although severe weather is not expected, isolated storms could still bring some severe conditions.
Storm Chances and Locations
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, thunderstorms are expected to develop in the afternoon and continue into the evening. The areas with the highest likelihood of rain and storms are around Concordia, Lincoln, and Ellsworth, where the chances could reach as high as 70%.
Other areas such as Hays, Great Bend, and Ness City will have a 50–60% chance of storms, while Dodge City and Garden City are looking at 30–40% chances.
Severe Weather Potential
While the threat for severe weather remains low, there’s still a possibility of isolated storms producing hail up to the size of a half-dollar and wind gusts of up to 60 mph. Widespread rainfall amounts are expected to be between 0.10 and 0.50 inches, with the potential for locally higher totals during heavier downpours.
Safety Tips for Residents and Drivers
Residents should be prepared for rapidly changing road conditions, especially during the evening commute. If thunderstorms develop, it’s important to stay indoors and avoid driving through flooded areas. Visibility could be low, and roads may become slick or impassable.
Rain Chances Into Saturday
Although the heaviest storms are expected on Friday afternoon and evening, rain chances will persist into Saturday in some areas. The National Weather Service will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as timing and severity details are refined.
