On September 24, 2023, Viktor Marie Vendler, who had been romantically involved with Leroy Johnston in the past, convinced him to go on a hike in the Mill Stream Run Reservation in Strongsville, a Cleveland suburb.
Vendler promised a surprise, but it was anything but pleasant. After leading Johnston into a secluded, wooded area, Vendler shot him in the back of the head.
