The Origins of the Galveston Pleasure Pier

Afterward, the Flagship Hotel was built in its place, offering a unique stay above the Gulf waters. The hotel operated for decades, but by the late 2000s, it was severely damaged by Hurricane Ike in 2008.

In 2011, Tilman Fertitta, a Galveston native and entrepreneur, saw the potential to revive the area’s rich entertainment history. Fertitta, along with his company Landry’s Inc., announced plans to demolish the Flagship Hotel, replacing it with a modern version of the iconic Pleasure Pier.
The new pier was designed to combine classic amusement park charm with modern thrills, drawing inspiration from famous attractions like Navy Pier in Chicago and the Santa Monica Pier in California.
The Modern Pleasure Pier: A World of Fun
The modern Pleasure Pier opened its doors to the public in 2012, featuring 16 rides ranging from thrilling roller coasters to family-friendly attractions. One of the most exciting features of the new pier is the Iron Shark roller coaster, a German-engineered thrill ride that gives riders the sensation of soaring over the Gulf with four dramatic 360-degree flips.
Additionally, the 100-foot-tall Galaxy Wheel ferris wheel, with its spectacular LED light display, offers panoramic views of the coastline.
Other thrilling rides include the Texas Star Flyer, the tallest swing ride in Texas, which soars 230 feet above the Gulf. Visitors can also enjoy attractions like bumper cars, a carousel, and a midway full of games and food stalls.
The pier also houses the first-ever Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. restaurant in Texas, giving fans of the classic movie “Forrest Gump” a chance to enjoy seafood in a fun and unique setting.
