A tragic accident occurred on Saturday afternoon, June 28, when a 56-year-old man from Baytown lost his life in a single-vehicle crash. The incident took place on State Highway 146 (SH 146), just north of Moss Hill.
Details of the Incident
According to Sgt. Rob Willoughby, a supervisor for the Liberty County office of the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the man was driving a 2014 Nissan Rogue in the southbound lane around 3:30 p.m.
For reasons that are still unknown, the driver left the roadway and collided with a large tree. It is believed that he never applied the brakes before the crash, leading authorities to suspect a possible medical emergency.
After hitting the tree, the vehicle spun and rolled over, eventually coming to rest on its roof in an eastside ditch. Unfortunately, the driver was partially ejected from the car during the rollover, which resulted in his death.
Investigation and Autopsy
Pct. 3 Justice of the Peace Cody Parrish arrived at the scene to conduct an inquest and ordered an autopsy. The man’s body was taken from the site by Neal Funeral Home.
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) launched an investigation into the accident, with Trooper Corey Prantil leading the inquiry. He was assisted by Troopers Brittany Sherman, Natalie Aguirre, and Sgt. Willoughby.
