A Syrian teenager, identified as Mohammad A., has been charged in connection with helping to plan an attack on Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour concert in Vienna last August.
The 19-year-old suspect has been accused of supporting a foreign terrorist organization and preparing a serious act of violence, according to Germany’s prosecutor general in a statement released on June 27, 2025.
Details of the Plot
Mohammad A. is alleged to have been in contact with an Austrian teenager who was planning a bomb attack at one of Swift’s concerts in Vienna. The suspect reportedly became involved with the terrorist group Islamic State (IS) in April 2024.
Between mid-July and August of 2024, Mohammad A. allegedly helped the Austrian suspect by translating bomb-making instructions from Arabic and facilitating communication with an IS member. Additionally, he provided the Austrian with a text for an oath of allegiance to IS, which the individual used to officially join the group.
The teenager is not currently in custody, and authorities continue to investigate his role in the thwarted attack.
The Thwarted Terrorist Plot
The planned attack, which authorities believe was intended to kill tens of thousands of people, was foiled in time to prevent a potential catastrophe. According to a CIA official, the intelligence community, working with Austrian authorities, provided crucial information that led to the arrests of the main suspect and two other individuals.
These arrests were made just days before Swift’s scheduled performances in Vienna.
On August 7, 2024, concert promoter Barracuda Music announced the cancellation of Swift’s scheduled performances on August 8, 9, and 10, prioritizing the safety of the concert attendees.
The decision was made after authorities uncovered the terrorist plot, which involved explosives and knives, with the primary aim of causing mass casualties at the concert.
The Arrests and Investigation
Three people were arrested in connection to the plot: the 19-year-old Austrian, a 17-year-old Austrian, and an 18-year-old Iraqi. While the identities of the suspects have not been released, authorities have confirmed the connection to IS.
During an August 8 news conference, Austrian officials revealed that the 19-year-old Austrian suspect admitted to planning to carry out the attack at the concert, intending to kill himself and as many people as possible.
Omar Haijawi-Pirchner, head of Austria’s Directorate of State Security and Intelligence, confirmed that the suspect was planning to use explosives and knives to carry out the attack, which he described as a suicide mission. Swift’s concert was the target due to its massive audience, making it an ideal location for such a horrific event.
Swift’s Response to the Cancellations
In the wake of the cancellations, Swift took to Instagram to share her feelings about the situation. She expressed her devastation over the canceled concerts but acknowledged the importance of the authorities’ work in preventing the tragedy.
“The reason for the cancellations filled me with a new sense of fear, and a tremendous amount of guilt because so many people had planned on coming to those shows,” Swift wrote on August 21. “But I was also so grateful to the authorities because thanks to them, we were grieving concerts and not lives.”
Swift also explained her decision to remain silent about the situation at first. “Let me be very clear: I am not going to speak about something publicly if I think doing so might provoke those who would want to harm the fans who come to my shows,” she said.
“In cases like this one, ‘silence’ is actually showing restraint, and waiting to express yourself at a time when it’s right to.”
