St. Louis is currently experiencing a long-lasting heat wave, with temperatures soaring above 90°F for five consecutive days. The National Weather Service predicts that this intense heat will continue until Sunday, June 30, with highs in the low to mid-90s, possibly making this one of the longest heat streaks of the season.
Dangerous Heat Continues in St. Louis
Since June 20, St. Louis has seen daily temperatures hitting or exceeding 90°F. The hottest days so far have reached around 94°F, raising concerns for residents, especially those without access to cooling or air conditioning.
With no immediate relief in sight, the heat wave is expected to stretch through the end of the month and into early July.
Health Risks from Extreme Heat
The persistent heat poses significant risks, particularly for heat-sensitive groups like young children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions. Residents across central and eastern Missouri, including cities like Jefferson City, Columbia, and Farmington, are urged to stay indoors as much as possible and stay hydrated. It’s also crucial to limit outdoor activities, especially during the hottest parts of the day.
Chance of Showers and Temporary Relief
There’s a 20 to 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms from Thursday through Saturday, which may provide some brief relief in areas that receive rain. If storms occur, temperatures could briefly drop into the 80s, but rainfall will be limited to only a few areas, leaving most of the region to continue sweltering under the heat.
Heat Wave Expected to Persist Into Next Week
This ongoing heat wave is likely to continue well into next week, with no significant cooldown expected. If conditions worsen, the National Weather Service may issue additional advisories. Residents should remain prepared for extended periods of extreme heat and continue to take precautions to protect their health.
