Christian Brueckner, the German man officially named a suspect in the death of British toddler Madeleine McCann, could be released from prison earlier than expected following the payment of an outstanding fine for him.
Brueckner, currently incarcerated for a separate crime, was previously under investigation for his involvement in Madeleine’s 2007 disappearance and presumed death.
According to reports from the Associated Press on June 23, 2025, Brueckner’s release could come as soon as mid-September 2025, instead of his original release date in January 2026.
Background on the Madeleine McCann Case
Madeleine McCann, a three-year-old girl from the UK, disappeared while on vacation with her family in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in May 2007. Her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, were dining at a nearby restaurant and left Madeleine and her younger twin siblings asleep in their apartment.
During the evening, Kate McCann discovered that the window to the apartment was open, and Madeleine was missing from her bed.
Initially, Madeleine’s parents were considered suspects in her disappearance. However, in 2022, Brueckner was officially named as a suspect after an investigation linked him to the case.
Brueckner’s Criminal History and Imprisonment
Christian Brueckner, who had a history of criminal activity, was already serving time in prison for various crimes when he became linked to the McCann case.
In December 2019, he was sentenced to seven years in prison for raping a 72-year-old American woman in Portugal in 2005. At the time, he was also serving a 21-month sentence in Germany for drug dealing.
Recently, it was revealed that Brueckner had an outstanding fine related to previous criminal cases involving forgery and bodily harm. The fine was paid by an anonymous individual, later revealed to be a former employee of Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office.
While the identity of the person who paid the fine remains undisclosed, reports suggest that the individual later tried to recover the money after realizing its connection to Brueckner’s case. Authorities have stated that they will investigate whether the payment can be refunded if it was made by mistake.
Madeleine McCann’s Parents Still Hope for Answers
Despite the passage of time, Madeleine’s parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, continue to hold out hope for answers regarding their daughter’s disappearance.

Kate McCann has said, “I think every kind of event that we do, whether it be a birthday or a family occasion or even an achievement or something, that is kind of when you really feel her absence.”
