Sioux Falls and much of southeastern South Dakota are facing dangerously high temperatures on Tuesday, along with the threat of severe thunderstorms.
The National Weather Service has issued warnings for extreme heat and severe weather that could lead to hazardous conditions throughout the evening. Residents are urged to take precautions against the heat and be prepared for possible storms.
Dangerous Heat in Southeastern South Dakota
Temperatures in Sioux Falls, Mitchell, Yankton, and surrounding areas are expected to reach dangerous levels, with heat index values potentially climbing between 100°F and 107°F.
Extreme Heat Warnings are in effect, and the National Weather Service cautions that heat-related illnesses, such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke, can set in quickly for those without air conditioning or adequate cooling.
People are strongly encouraged to limit outdoor activities, stay hydrated, and wear light, breathable clothing to avoid heat-related issues.
Severe Thunderstorms to Develop
In addition to the intense heat, severe thunderstorms are expected to develop in southeastern South Dakota on Tuesday afternoon. A Slight Risk (Level 2 out of 5) has been issued, meaning there is a potential for dangerous weather conditions.
The storms are forecast to develop between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. and will move east-northeast into Minnesota and Iowa overnight. These storms could bring large hail, potentially the size of golf balls, as well as wind gusts over 70 mph. While the tornado threat is low, it has not been completely ruled out, making the storms a serious concern.
Precautions for Heat and Storms
The combination of extreme heat and severe thunderstorms may put a strain on local utilities, and vulnerable populations are at risk. Residents should take extra care to avoid prolonged outdoor exposure. Be sure to stay inside during the hottest parts of the day, especially between noon and 4 p.m.
Those living in homes without air conditioning should visit public places, like shopping malls or libraries, where it is cooler. Check on elderly neighbors and relatives to ensure they are safe from the heat, and ensure pets have access to plenty of water and shade.
Storm Alerts and Continued Risk
The weather warnings remain in effect through early Wednesday morning, and updates are expected as conditions evolve. As the storms move into the region, power outages, property damage, and other storm-related hazards are possible.
Be sure to monitor local news or weather alerts for the latest information. Emergency kits, including flashlights, batteries, and essential supplies, should be prepared in case of storm-related disruptions.
Sioux Falls and southeastern South Dakota are facing a day of extreme heat and the threat of severe thunderstorms, creating potentially dangerous conditions.
It’s important to stay updated on the weather and take all necessary precautions to protect yourself, your family, and your pets from the heat and storms. Be prepared for possible power outages, and don’t hesitate to seek shelter if storms develop.
