Boaters and mariners in western Lake Superior are being urged to take immediate safety precautions as a Special Marine Warning remains in effect until 6:45 a.m. EDT Saturday.

The warning, issued by the National Weather Service in Marquette, is due to high winds and dangerous wave conditions, particularly near Isle Royale and the Portage Canal.

Details of the Special Marine Warning

The warning covers waters from Saxon Harbor in Wisconsin to the upper entrance of the Portage Canal in Michigan, extending up to 5 nautical miles offshore, including Isle Royale National Park and areas near Ontonagon.

Winds are expected to exceed 40 knots, and pea-sized hail could also occur, adding to the hazardous conditions in the affected area.

Dangerous Conditions Expected Near Isle Royale

The most severe conditions are expected near Freda and the southern shores of Isle Royale, where steep waves could pose a serious risk to smaller vessels. These conditions could lead to capsizing, especially for smaller boats.

Although no waterspouts are forecasted, the rapid change in weather can lead to quickly intensifying conditions that are dangerous for both recreational and commercial mariners.

Safety Recommendations for Mariners

The National Weather Service advises boaters operating small craft to remain in port or take immediate protective action. Mariners should avoid navigating in exposed waters, and should steer clear of shallow reefs or shoals, as these areas could intensify wave action and further increase risk.

It’s essential for all operators to stay alert and prioritize safety as the warning remains in effect.

With high winds and steep waves impacting western Lake Superior, boaters and mariners should exercise extreme caution and avoid unnecessary risks. The warning expires at 6:45 a.m. EDT Saturday, but additional advisories may be issued if conditions persist. Stay informed and stay safe.
