A dispute over garbage led to a tragic shooting in Henderson, North Carolina, where two people lost their lives. The victims, 63-year-old Teresa Davis and her 26-year-old son Joseph Jeffreys Jr., were shot and killed on Sunday evening after an argument with their neighbor, Michael Sharron Wright.
The incident, which shocked the local community, highlights the senseless nature of the crime and the devastating impact it had on the victims’ family.
The Shooting Incident
On Sunday, at around 6:45 p.m., police responded to a shooting call in the 600 block of Maple Street, located about 40 miles northeast of Raleigh. When officers arrived, they found Teresa Davis and Joseph Jeffreys Jr. suffering from gunshot wounds. Sadly, both victims were pronounced dead at the scene by medical staff.
Police quickly identified the suspect as 41-year-old Michael Sharron Wright and issued an arrest warrant for two counts of murder. Authorities did not immediately disclose the details surrounding the shooting, but interviews with friends and family of the victims revealed more information. According to these accounts, the tragedy stemmed from a dispute over garbage cans.
The Dispute That Led to Murder
Teresa Davis and Michael Wright were neighbors, and the conflict reportedly began when Joseph Jeffreys Jr. went to Wright’s home to confront him about garbage cans that Wright had thrown into Davis’ yard. In the heat of the argument, Wright allegedly used Jeffreys’ own gun to shoot and kill both victims.
Tennisha Eaton, a friend of Davis, expressed her disbelief over the senselessness of the crime. “It was over trash… This woman is gone. This boy is gone, over some trash,” Eaton told a local news station.
The tragedy was even more heartbreaking as the shooting occurred in front of Jeffreys’ three children, who witnessed the horrifying event. Eaton added, “That’s so heartbreaking for the grandkids to be in the car, his kids to see their daddy and their grandmother get killed. That’s senseless.”
Wright’s Past and Surrender
Michael Wright’s violent history adds a chilling element to this tragic case. Wright was released from prison in January 2024 after serving time for the 2010 murder of his uncle, 54-year-old Kirk Douglas Wright Sr. Wright was convicted of second-degree murder in 2013 and served nearly 14 years for the crime.
Wright’s uncle was found buried in a shallow grave in his backyard, and the case left a lasting scar on the local community.
After the double murder on Sunday, police warned that Wright should be considered armed and dangerous. However, in an unexpected turn of events, Wright contacted Granville County Sheriff Robert Fountain early the next morning to surrender.
Wright insisted that he would only turn himself in to Sheriff Fountain. After further phone communication, Wright met the sheriff in the parking lot of a local restaurant, where he was taken into custody without incident.
