In a span of less than 24 hours this week, the Houston SPCA Animal Cruelty Investigators rescued 82 animals from two separate hoarding situations in the greater Houston area, according to the organization. These cases, one in Pasadena and another in Tomball, involved dozens of cats and dogs living in terrible conditions.

Pasadena Rescue: 71 Animals Saved from Hoarding Conditions

The most recent rescue took place on Wednesday morning in Pasadena’s Red Bluff Terrace neighborhood. Houston SPCA investigators, working with Pasadena Animal Control, discovered 70 small, emaciated dogs and one bird at a residence. The house was found to be in deplorable condition, with the interior heavily contaminated by feces and urine and cluttered with debris throughout the property. All 71 animals from this Pasadena location were safely removed and are now under the care of the Houston SPCA for medical evaluations and treatment.

Tomball Rescue: Tragic Discovery of Deceased Cats

Just a day earlier, on Tuesday, Houston SPCA investigators partnered with Harris County Constable Precinct 1 to respond to a separate hoarding case in Tomball, near Sorrel Meadows Drive. Inside the home, investigators found nine cats confined to wire kennels covered in urine and feces. These kennels were stacked three high, and the animals had no access to proper food, water, or sanitation. Tragically, six deceased cats were found around the property. In addition, two dogs, kept in filthy wire kennels, were rescued from the home. All surviving animals from the Tomball rescue are now receiving medical treatment at the Houston SPCA’s Animal Hospital.

Importance of Reporting Animal Cruelty

Travis Crisman, the vice president of shelter services at the Houston SPCA, emphasized the importance of the public’s role in reporting animal cruelty cases. He explained, “We share these types of cruelty cases because they are a powerful reminder of how we rely on the community to report animal neglect and abuse, so we can respond swiftly when animals are in distress. A phone call or online report can be the difference between suffering and safety for countless animals. Speaking up truly saves lives.”

Ongoing Need for Community Support

These two rescues highlight the ongoing need for the community to remain vigilant and report animal cruelty whenever they encounter it. The Houston SPCA encourages individuals to report any instances of animal abuse through their website or by calling their hotline. Additionally, the organization stresses the need for resources to continue to protect vulnerable animals from abuse and neglect.
