The tri-state area is gearing up for a hot afternoon, with temperatures expected to soar on Thursday. Yonkers is facing a 96% chance of hitting 90°F, making it the most likely location in the region to experience extreme heat. The National Weather Service has issued warnings for areas across New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, where multiple cities are at risk of crossing the 90-degree threshold.
Areas Affected by the Heat
Newark, N.J. is following close behind Yonkers, with a 90% chance of reaching 90°F. Other locations like Newburgh and Central Park are forecasted to have a 75% chance of topping 90°F. In contrast, areas like West Milford are at a 60% chance, and Bridgeport and New Haven in Connecticut have a 45% likelihood. On the eastern end of Long Island, Riverhead remains the least likely to feel the heat, with only a 5% chance.
Health Risks and Safety Measures
With the high temperatures expected, residents are advised to take extra precautions. The heat can lead to heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke, especially during peak afternoon hours. It’s essential to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities, and check on vulnerable neighbors and pets, particularly in urban areas like New York City, where heat can become trapped due to buildings, concrete, and asphalt.
Weekend Outlook
The heat risk will likely decrease overnight, but more hot weather could return over the weekend. As temperatures rise again, it’s important for residents to stay aware of changing weather conditions and take necessary steps to stay cool.
