Basketball coaches announced for Prosper Rock Hill High School; Prosper ISD hires Stephanie Shaw, Shawn Williams

Stephanie Shaw

Prosper’s Rock Hill High School has selected Stephanie Shaw, currently the Byron Nelson High School Head Girls Basketball Coach, as the Girls Basketball Coach.

Coach Shaw comes to Prosper after coaching for three years at Byron Nelson High School in Trophy Club, Texas, near Lake Grapevine, where she was named the 5-6A Coach of the Year coaching the team to the first Bi-District game in four years.

Before Byron Nelson, Coach Shaw’s career was in Oklahoma where she served as Head Coach and Associate Athletic Director at Claremore High School.

Before coaching at the secondary level, Coach Shaw coached for six years at the university level as Assistant Coach at Oklahoma City University, Assistant Coach at Wayland Baptist University, and Head Coach for Northwestern Oklahoma State University

Coach Shaw earned her Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Wayland Baptist University where she played basketball receiving several recognitions. She then earned her Master’s in Secondary Education from East Central University in Ada, Okla. She is certified in Physical Education K-12 and is a Registered Athletic Administrator.

Coach Shaw says: “Athletics is a tool that should be used as a reflection of life, in order to prepare young student-athletes for the trials and tribulations that they will face later in their lives. … My goals every year are to prepare my players and coaches with the tools to become better people on and off the floor. I strive to not allow student athletes or coaches to accept themselves as they are but, instead, show them a vision of what they could become, and help them achieve that vision.”

Shawn Williams

Rock Hill has chosen Shawn Williams as Boys Basketball Coach.

Prosper ISD Athletic Director Valerie Little said: “Coach Williams is bringing a wealth of knowledge from college basketball to high school basketball, which will be critical in building the Rock Hill basketball program. His passion and love for kids and basketball will be evident to anyone that meets him. He is the epitome of a player’s coach, and we are looking forward to his energy propelling the Rock Hill program forward.”

A graduate of Duncanville High School, Coach Williams earned his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology degree from Southern Methodist University (SMU) in University Park on the Hilltop in Dallas where he also received a Masters of Liberal Studies. Coach Williams served as a Graduate Assistant Coach at SMU from 2013-2015.

Coach Williams was a key part of the 2007 State Championship Basketball Team at Duncanville High School where he was later named Mr. Texas Basketball in 2009. He continued his career playing at SMU for Coach Larry Brown from 2011-2015.

Since graduating from SMU, Coach Williams has been at MacArthur High School in Irving, Texas, serving as a Special Education Teacher and Varsity Assistant Coach. He is married to Veronica, and they have two daughters, Rose (5) and Reign (3) who will be attending elementary school in Prosper ISD.

Dance educators assessment awards Frisco ISD high schools a top rating

All 10 Frisco ISD high school dance programs received the highest rating, Division 1, in the Dance Educators Assessment of Learning (DEAL) assessment.

Frisco Liberty and Memorial high schools hosted the highly anticipated event that was a culmination of the technical and execution elements taught during Dance I, a class offered for first-year dance students at all high schools.

Frisco ISD requires no prior experience or dance training to participate in Dance I.

“The class is meant for accessibility for everyone and doesn’t require a lifetime of dancing,” said Nika Carter, a DEAL officiant. “A dancer’s only limitation to their success is their desire. Many do not find their niche until they take a dance class and their worldview immediately expands.”

During a fast-paced span of 45 minutes, students were taught a dance routine, cleaned and polished this routine, performed it and received a rating. Three judges evaluated everything from technical aspects of the performance to whether students sought clarity through relevant questions during instruction.

The DEAL process is based on the Dance I Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), which includes specific vocabulary and expectations as it connects to movement.

“The format is similar to sight reading with music and a lot weighs on the Director who must learn along with the students,” Carter said. “The question is can the students apply what they learned quickly, think on their feet and quickly pull off a performance in a limited time.” Source: Frisco Texas schools

Roads under repair in Plano through 2021; allow extra time and avoid speeding once you get past construction zones

Allow an additional 20 to 30 minutes if driving through Plano these days on Custer, Parker, Independence or Preston or Coit Road. Traffic is backing up at peak driving hours.

Look for additional lanes closing between 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. around the city.

There has also been about $100,000 in concrete work on Shiloh Road down near Plano Parkway and Renner Road.

If it seems like Parker Road is always under construction or repairs or lanes closures, know that the current 18-month $3.8-million project that started in June is expected to run deep into 2020 around Alma and Rainier east of Custer.

Custer Road is also under repair around Parker Road.

Coit Road will get about $6.4 million in road work from Parker on up to Spring Creek then finally to SH 121. The whole project could run late into 2021.

Spring Creek is under construction on side streets where homes face the parkway between Alma and Custer. Slow down for school zone there, too.

There’s wall and sidewalk work on Independence and Rainier, where a crew tore down neighborhood brick wall 10 weeks ago. Residents said they came home to find pets loose and backyard wall removed.

Plano Parkway work will run through March 2020 from Ohio Drive over to Commerce Drive.

Jupiter Road will be worked on from Allen to 14th in Plano. The $4 million road work and sidewalk could run far into 2021.

Slow down when you see the orange cones and construction signs. And beware, drivers are not given much warning before needing to move over a lane.

Remember to allow extra time if driving through Plano to Richardson, Allen, Carrollton, Frisco or The Colony. Don’t speed through Plano.

Plano Principal’s message about loss of three lives in crash on Hedgcoxe

Dear Plano Senior High Families:

The Plano ISD community experienced the devastating loss of three young lives over the weekend, including a former and a current student at our school. We want our families to know that, along with our counseling team, additional counselors and administrative staff will be here tomorrow, and for as long as needed, to assist students and faculty in coping with this loss. We ask that parents please join us in encouraging students to take advantage of these counseling services as needed. We appreciate your compassion and continued support as a school community during this difficult time.

Sincerely,

Sarah Watkins
Principal
