From City of Murphy
Run down on running in Murphy: The evolution of the running races in Murphy has reached a new high as the Murphy Half Marathon, 10K & 5K, set for Sunday, May 5, represent the latest iteration of the race which began as part of Murphy Maize Days in 2010.
That initial event, which included a 5K and a one-mile walk, was held in conjunction with the City’s annual fall festival, always scheduled for the final Saturday in September. Proceeds of the race were set aside for several charities and foundations.
Then in 2014, following the untimely death of Police Sgt. Kyle Kucauskas, a 10K race was added to raise funds for a scholarship program in his honor. The races were suspended for one year, but have returned, unconnected to Maize Days, but in a larger format with proceeds set exclusively for the Sgt. Kucauskas scholarships.
The Kyle Kucauskas Educational Foundation is a non-profit foundation that is dedicated to the development of future leaders in our next generation of law enforcement. The educational foundation provides educational assistance to students pursuing careers in the fields of law enforcement and criminal justice.
Races now include a half marathon (13.1 miles) a 10K (6.2 miles) and a 5K (3.1 miles).
Start and finish for all three races is inside Tom Kimbrough Stadium, 700 North Murphy Road. Race day will begin at 6 a.m. with registration and packet pickup. The 5K starts at 7 a.m. and both the 10K and the half marathon begin at 7:10 a.m. There is a four-hour time limit for the half marathon. Awards for the 5K begin at 8 a.m. Awards for the 10K and half marathon begin at 8:30 a.m. and the course closes at 11 a.m.
*** Registration and additional information on the races, including entry fees and award material, can be obtained at https://www.amptrunning.com/murphy-half/.
All three race layouts are certified by USA Track and Field and feature beautiful views of Murphy and Parker. The 5K run/walk is a scenic out-and-back course from the stadium, whereas the 10K and half marathon courses take runners along the streets of Murphy and through the peaceful country scenery of Parker. Runners will pass by the iconic Southfork Ranch, the setting for the 1980s television show, “Dallas.”
All race participants (including 5K and 10K finishers) receive a 4-inch finisher medal and a gender-specific tech T-shirt. Half marathoners receive a custom 13.1 Kyle Miles charm to attach to the finisher medal.
