The biggest crowd ever to watch a state high school football championship saw Allen’s Kyler Murray pass for four touchdowns in the Eagles’ 63-28 victory over Pearland in the Class 5A Division I championship at Arlington’s AT&T Dallas Cowboys Stadium on Saturday.

The victory – the team’s 27th in a row – gives No. 1-ranked Allen two consecutive state titles. The 63 points was the most scored by the winner in the state football final. The turnout for the game set a record too with 54,347 gathering to watch the two state finalists.

Murray, a second-year starter, passed (11 of 14) for 280 yards and ran for 188 and scored once himself

Opponents know that QB Murray is just a junior too. Allen’s poised QB ignited the fourth-quarter fireworks with a 37-yard scoring dash to round out the scoring.

THE EAGLES produced 670 yards on offense. Allen’s Jaelen Barlow (18 carries for 134 yards) rushed for two touchdowns. … Murray found Jalen Guyton (4 catches for 125 yards) and Cole Carter (5 for 111 yards) open for two touchdown passes.

KEY PLAY: Down by seven points, Allen’s Chad Adams ran back a kickoff by breaking free up the middle and then closed out the scoring burst up the sideline. A Pearland special teams player finally caught up with Adams near the end zone, where Adams stretched for the touchdown to tie the score at 14-14. Adams also scored a rushing touchdown.

ROAD TO THE TITLE – Last year Allen went 15-1. This season Allen posted a 16-0 mark, including a win over No. 2 DeSoto last week in the state semifinals. … Allen has three state championships in the last six seasons and won 3 of 3 appearances in the state final.

STATE FINAL TRIVIA: Which team scored 59 points and held the scoring mark until Allen broke it on Saturday.

TOUGH OPPONENT: Pearland made a big splash in its first state final three seasons back by upsetting No. 1 Euless Trinity, which went into the game as the defending champ. Pearland, which finishes at 14-2, was led in rushing with 88 yards on 18 attempts by Hayden Cole.

ALLEN’S DEFENSE intercepted Pearland quarterback Connor Heath (16 for 31, 110 yards) twice. Allen didn’t flinch when Pearland scored on the opening drive of the game.

TRIVIA ANSWER: Allen is the first football team to score 60 points in a championship game in the top classification. Flower Mound Marcus beat Alief Hastings 59-20 in 1997.
