Reyes, Dodge have new coaching jobs

Two former McKinney coaches have landed new jobs.

Former McKinney and Richardson Pearce head coach Bobby Reyes is now head coach in Nacogdoches after the Dragons went 1-9 in Class 4A Region II.

Nacogdoches’ best marks have been 6-4 records in 2005 and 2008. Reyes replaces Scott Ford, who took a job in Hidalgo.

Nacogdoches Athletic Director Farshid Niroumand said, “After all of the interviews were completed, the selection committee voted unanimously to recommend Reyes for the position. He has a reputation as a good coach and good teacher. He expects excellence in academics, athletics and discipline. We believe he will be a good fit for Nacogdoches.”

Reyes, a Kilgore native and SFA graduate brings 37 years of coaching experience to the Dragon program. He began his career in Nacogdoches as a baseball coach in the late 70s. One of his early teams was No. 4 in the nation and No. 2 in state with a 26-2 record.

“I don’t make promises that I can’t keep, but I can guarantee you that we are going to get better every day,” Reyes said. “I expect our kids to be good citizens as well as good athletes and to represent NHS in a manner that this town deserves.”

Reyes led Pearce to the playoffs three times and McKinney twice.

Former McKinney offensive coordinator Todd Dodge is now football coach at Marble Falls, Texas.

Dodge, who set the single-game passing record in college for the Texas Longhorns after being the first high school quarterback in the state to pass for 3,000 yards while at Port Arthur Jefferson, is back in his comfort zone at a one high school town that’s growing.

McKinney won state in Class 3A under coach Ron Poe in 1979, and just fell short of winning the state championship in 1986.

McKinney saw what Dodge was doing as quarterbacks and wide receivers coach at Rockwall back in the day when the Run and Shoot offense was gaining popularity. In 1987, the Yellowjackets played West Orange-Stark for the Class 4A state championship.

Dodge joined McKinney as offensive coordinator under Poe. McKinney’s passing attack began to emerge, and the Lions made the Class 4A regional round in 1991.

Dodge went on to win state four times at Southlake Carroll, and fell one point in a fifth state championship game against Katy.

Dodge, who married the daughter of a football coach in Westlake, replaces Cord Woerner after Marble Falls went 3-7. Marble Falls is northwest of Austin.

“I think it’s a great situation for us,” Dodge said. “That community is hungry for a winner, facilities have been upgraded and they have a new stadium that was part of a $74 million bond issue they did in two phases. It’s going to take some building to have a winning program but I’m not afraid to do that.”
