Frisco honors volunteers

The City of Frisco honored 378 registered volunteers of our Frisco Municipal Volunteer Program (MVP) who donated 10 or more hours of their time and talent to the city in 2011

Frisco Volunteer of the Year: Ursula Young gave more than 550 hours of her time working at the Frisco Heritage Museum as a docent and teaching a younger generation about Frisco’s past and history in general.

In addition to Volunteer of the Year, honors for outstanding work in 2011 went to the following Frisco MVPs:

Teen Volunteer of the Year: Sara Kim gave more than 100 hours of her time volunteering at Frisco Public Library.
Gold Award:  Judy Clark volunteered more than 450 hours at Frisco Public Library.
Silver Award:  Patrick Stewart served more than 250 hours working with the police program Citizens on Patrol (COPs) • Spirit Award: Susanne Kerley shows up regularly with a smile and a history lesson at the Frisco Heritage Museum.
Rookie Award: Donna Bohn became a Frisco MVP in 2011 and is now a familiar face at Frisco Fire Safety Town.

Mayor Maher Maso: “You juggle business, you juggle family and a lot of other responsibilities, and still you find time to volunteer. We don’t underestimate what you do for the community.”

The 5th Annual MVP Awards Reception was held April 25 in the City Council Chambers at the George A. Purefoy Municipal Center. CBS Channel 11 reporter J.D. Miles served as master of ceremonies.

Did you know? While about 400 of the city’s volunteers were honored at the reception, Frisco’s Municipal Volunteer Program currently has 2,125 ‘active’
volunteers listed in the database. Many worked at one of our special events like Frisco Freedom Fest or the NCAA Division I Football Championship.

Do volunteers save the city money? In 2011, volunteers collective hard work amounted to 25,194 hours of time donated at an estimate value to the city of $538,143.

The ceremony will air on the Frisco Television Network (FTVN) at the following times during the month of May: Fridays at 7 p.m., Sundays at 3 p.m. and Wednesdays at 9 a.m. FTVN is broadcast on AT&T U-verse channel 99. Grande cable channel 12, Time Warner HD cable channel 16, and Verizon FIOS channel 37.  FTVN is also available 24/7 at http://www.FriscoTexas.gov/FTVN.  View photos from the event on the city’s Facebook page: http://www.Facebook.com/CityOfFriscoTX.

Aggies win Big 12 golf title

Congrats from Frisco to the Texas Aggies! Big 12 Champions

Texas A&M
TRINITY, Texas – True freshman Ty Dunlap drained a two-foot putt for par on the 18th hole at Whispering Pines Sunday afternoon to bring home the Texas A&M men’s golf program’s first-ever Big 12 Championship.
The Aggies finished the weekend at 13-over (296-286-286-297=1165), three shots ahead of No. 1-ranked Texas (1168, +16). The conference crown was the 11th in team history and the program’s first since capturing the 1987 Southwest Conference title in Houston.

“This is a tough championship to get your hands on and it feels great,” head coach J.T. Higgins said. “It’s such a great golf conference. You’re competing against Oklahoma State and Texas, who are two of the best golf programs in the country, and it seems the No. 1-ranked team in the country is in the field every year. You know you have to play your best golf to have a chance to win. I’m so proud of the way we finished and closed it out. Texas caught us, and we just battled back over the last three holes and we got it.

“It was a true freshman against one of the top 10 amateur players in the world with the Big 12 Championship on the line,” Higgins said. “He hit a perfect drive, a perfect wedge and a perfect lag putt. I don’t know what else we could have asked him. It was unbelievable.”

Texas Tech (+31) finished a distant third, followed by Oklahoma (+33) and Baylor (+35). Oklahoma State, which had won the last five Big 12 titles, placed sixth at 44-over, with Iowa State (+52), Missouri (+57), Kansas State (+75) and Kansas (+94) rounding out the field.

The title marked the Texas A&M Athletic Department’s fifth Big 12 crown of the year (soccer postseason, women’s swimming and diving, men’s indoor track and field, women’s indoor track and field). With 37 conference titles since the start of the 2006-07 season, no Big 12 school has won more league hardware than the Aggies over the last six years.

FISHING STATE PARKS
The Texas Parks & Wildlife Department has waived the normal fishing license and stamp requirements for anyone fishing inside the property boundary of a Texas state park. Once you’ve paid the park entrance fees, no one needs a fishing license or stamp, whether freshwater or saltwater, adult or child, as long as they’re inside the state park. However, bag limits, length limits, and other regulations will still apply, and be enforced.
SHARELUNKERS
The Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens, Texas, serves as headquarters for the Toyota ShareLunker Program, which encourages anglers who have caught 13-pound-plus largemouth bass to lend or donate the fish to TPWD for spawning purposes.
