Veterans Memorial Park dedication at Craig Ranch

McKinney will host a ceremony celebrating the dedication of the Veterans Memorial Park in McKinney at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12.

Speakers at the event will include U.S. Congressmen Sam Johnson and Ralph Hall, and McKinney Mayor Brian Loughmiller. The McKinney North High School choir will perform a choral prelude, and the ceremony also includes a flyover and performance of Taps.

The Veterans Memorial Park in McKinney features a Wall of Honor inscribed with names of Collin County service members who died in the line of duty, and the park honors all veterans. The Veterans Memorial Park is located at 6053 Weiskopf Ave. in Craig Ranch. Visit for more information.

Immediately after the ceremony, LegacyTexas Bank hosts the Lone Star Salute adjacent to the site. This event lasts until 2 p.m. and gives attendees the opportunity to visit with friends, family and veterans and tour the park. Music is provided by Kenny & the Kasuals. LegacyTexas Bank will be collecting personal care items to send as care packages to our Texas troops at the event.

Neil Sperry’s gardening tip

Garden Tip: If I were looking for (a) a great plant 12 months a year and (2) fall color from it, I’d choose ginkgo, Shumard and other red oaks, Japanese maples (shade only), Chinese pistachio, Shantung maple, Caddo maple, red maple, dogwood, crape myrtle, Boston ivy and, solely for East Texas, sweet gum and black gum. I’ve probably forgotten a few QUALITY plants. What do you like?
