Plano schools approve academy

On Tuesday, April 19, the Plano ISD Board of Trustees voted to approve the purchase of a facility located at 1701 Alma Drive in Plano for the purpose of opening a grades 9-12 academy from savings on bond funds. Only bond funds can be used for capital acquisitions and capital improvements.

The funds used for this building purchase cannot be used to subsidize ongoing operations and expenses that are being impacted by legislation and state funding. For instance, the funds used for this purchase cannot be used for employee salaries or annual operational costs.

While trustees are supportive of this exciting educational opportunity, they were adamant that any operational expense must be cost neutral to current expenses or subsidized by outside sources. Accordingly, the budgeted allocations for personnel and supplies will follow the students who attend the academy, thus being cost neutral.

Any additional overhead costs will be subsidized by corporate or private donations and sponsorships. The district has already begun conversations with members of the corporate community who have expressed great interest in partnering with Plano ISD.

The school district will take the next two years to develop the academy program and curriculum. The district is targeting 2013-14 as the opening school year for the academy with initial enrollment consisting of 9th and 10th grade students. Plano ISD will grow to serve 9th through 11th grades in 2014-15 and then will be at full implementation in 2015-16 serving grades 9-12.

Is your iPhone or iPad tracking you?

Security researchers raised eyebrows on Wednesday when they revealed that Apple’s iPhone and iPad with 3G support maintain detailed location logs that track user locations and that the data is stored on unencrypted their computer. The discovery of the not-so-hidden files has led to privacy concerns, although it doesn’t appear that Apple is collecting the location tracking data.

Letter from SRLA president

The Stonebridge Ranch Ladies Association (SRLA) believes in the power of support, the strength of families and the hope of our community. We also believe in having fun all along the way. Our volunteer group has been named Civic Organization of the Year and Volunteer Organization of the year previously by Hope’s Door, because of the commitment our members have toward accomplishment and achievement.

Last year the beneficiary of our annual fashion show was My Friend’s House. We raised and donated more money and items than ever for our various assistance projects. This year, we want to raise more money, increase our membership and tell our story to help others understand you can have fun yourself and help your community at the same time. We couldn’t do what we do without our members, and we will continue to need support as our community and its needs grow.

If you experience joy helping others and like to have fun we would love to meet you. I am personally inviting you to attend one of our meetings this year.

See you soon.

Wendy Shelley – President SRLA
